In years gone by, the town was a thriving centre with jute and flax mills and we have many remnants of the mills still standing.
The jute and flax mills used the power of the river to turn their cogs. Thought to be the oldest mill, the Muckle Mill by the bridge across the Ericht, with the neighbouring Plash and Meal Mills were all involved in the treatment and spinning of flax and jute. Further upstream is evidence of mill lade building which never came to fruition. A walk along the A93 from Rattray towards Glenshee will bring you to Keathbank Mill, now converted into flats.
